Some stories:

Iranian Diamonds in the Rough

Janet descended to the basement where three carpets lay crumpled in heaps.  These disheveled heirlooms survived dogs & cats, a broken water heater, shipment from the south to the north, and proved it in their stench, the white-residue cloaked fibers, and gaping basketball sized holes and tattered edges.  She asked me, “Should I just toss these?”, “Let Shahid take a look at them”, I said. He discovered that the smaller 9’x7’ Iranian Kerman was worth $9,000 and the larger, 11’x13’, sister carpet was worth $12,000 in its current condition! Janet decided to restore them. When they rolled out in her newly remodeled home she had tears in her eyes, “I can’t believe these are the same carpets, they are gorgeous. I’m so proud to have them back, my mother would be happy. And where did the holes go?”

Antique Cat Scratch Pad

Pat & Dan had let their beloved cat tear at the small 2.5’x4’ throw rug that graced their bathroom floor. Threadbare in spots, holes here and there, with edges & fringes dangling and broken threads they asked to just tidy up the loose bits.  Shahid’s estimate for a thorough cleaning and tidying the bits was $172.00.  His recommendation was for repairs totaling $1,500. I asked him, “Why would Pat & Dan want to spend fifteen hundred on this tiny throw rug?” Shahid replied, “This is a 100 year old Turkoman Yomud, very valuable.  I could take it to New York today and get $15,000 for it as is.” It is now repaired, and the cat would have to climb the wall to scratch it.
